Apiary school at Mitzach

A training tool for future generations of beekeepers.

At the bottom of Mitzach valley, on the edge of the forest, nestles the Rucher-Ecole (Apiary School) of the Syndicat des Apiculteurs de la Vallée de Saint-Amarin (Association of Beekeepers). Created in 1873, this association built this lovely chalet in 1981 for storing its work tools.
There are between 40,000 and 50,000 bees in a hive. Rearing the queen bees at the Mitzach apiary school is a gauge of quality of the swarm's descendants.
During the Fête du Miel (Honey Fair), traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday of July, the queens are marked "microchipped", in order to follow them during their egg-laying period.
