The Stork, the symbol of Alsace, is also the symbol of the town of Cernay, which has the nickname "city of the storks"!
Although there were thousands on storks in Alsace in 1900, there were only 2 couples by 1982! High-voltage wires and drought, as well as very powerful pesticides were the main causes of the Storks' disappearance.
It is to remedy this situation that one of the first centres for reintroducing storks was created in 1978, at the instigation of the mayor at that time and in close collaboration with the Regional Bird Banding Centre.
The initiative proved to be successful, because today the storks have repopulated the sky around Cernay and the park is home to around sixty settled storks.
