The Sée comes from a peat bog formed around fifteen-thousand years ago by the melting of the glacier hurtling down the Bussang mountain pass. The installation of valves led to the retention of water, which choked the initial vegetation for it to be replaced with an unusual landscape in which dead trees coexist with alders and willows, providing refuge for animals that are well-adapted to this environment.
